How to Capture Genuine Smiles in Family Photos

Family photos are more than snapshots—they’re about capturing the joy, laughter, and connection that makes your family unique. As a photographer, some of my favorite images come from authentic moments when smiles are unforced and emotions are real. But let’s face it: getting kids (and even adults!) to relax in front of the camera can sometimes be a challenge.

That’s why I’ve developed some creative approaches to help families feel at ease, have fun, and, most importantly, show their true personalities during photoshoots. If you’re preparing for your family session, these tips will help make the experience enjoyable and lead to the most genuine smiles.

Play First, Shoot Later

One thing I’ve learned in photographing kids is that the best moments happen when they’re not even thinking about the camera. Before asking them to pose, I like to start by playing a little! Whether it’s a silly game or letting them show me their best dance moves, this breaks the ice and gets the natural giggles flowing. When kids are having fun, those bright, genuine smiles will follow effortlessly.

Movement Brings Magic

Sitting still for a long time just doesn’t work for most kids—and it can feel awkward for adults, too! That’s why I love incorporating movement into my sessions. Movement allows families to interact naturally, whether running through a field, spinning around in a circle or even a quick game of tag. You’d be surprised how many magical moments come from the in-between shots when everyone’s just moving and having a good time.

Create Connection

Instead of focusing solely on the camera, I encourage families to focus on each other. Whisper a funny secret, give a quick tickle, or share a tight group hug—these interactions naturally bring out authentic smiles. Capturing that connection between family members creates photos that feel alive with emotion rather than just posed.

Embrace the Chaos

As a mom, I know how unpredictable family life can be. Sometimes, kids need a snack, a nap, or just a little break. And that’s okay! I always tell families it’s important not to stress when things aren’t going “perfectly.” A family photoshoot’s beauty is its unpredictability—often, those imperfect moments lead to the most heartwarming, candid photos.

Little Breaks Lead to Big Smiles

When kids start to lose focus (as they often do), a little break can make all the difference. Whether it’s a snack, a quick chat, or even some quiet time, stepping away from the session for a few minutes helps kids reset. When they come back, they’re often re-energized, and those genuine, joyful smiles shine through.

Personalities Shine Bright

One thing I tell parents is that I want to capture their children as they are—right now, in this moment. Whether they’re shy and thoughtful or full of energy and silliness, I aim to reflect that in my photos. I don’t push for “perfect” smiles but instead look for personality and authenticity. Letting kids be themselves creates photos that are as unique as they are.

The Parent’s Secret to Success: Relax!

It’s natural for parents to want everything to go smoothly during a photoshoot, but here’s a little secret: when parents are relaxed and having fun, kids will mirror that energy. So, instead of focusing on making sure your kids smile “just right,” get involved! Play with them, laugh with them, and enjoy the moment. Your ease will help everyone else feel more comfortable, and your photos will show those relaxed, genuine moments.

Focus on the Fun, Not Perfection

The best family photos come from sessions where everyone is focused on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about getting the “perfect” shot. I aim to create a relaxed, fun atmosphere where your family can be yourselves. When everyone’s enjoying the moment, the photos naturally reflect the love, joy, and connection that makes your family unique.
