But let’s face it: getting kids (and even adults!) to relax in front of the camera can sometimes be a challenge.

Movement allows families to interact naturally, whether running through a field, spinning around in a circle or even a quick game of tag. You’d be surprised how many magical moments come from the in-between shots when everyone’s just moving and having a good time.

Instead of focusing solely on the camera, I encourage families to focus on each other. Whisper a funny secret, give a quick tickle, or share a tight group hug—these interactions naturally bring out authentic smiles. Capturing that connection between family members creates photos that feel alive with emotion rather than just posed.

As a mom, I know how unpredictable family life can be. Sometimes, kids need a snack, a nap, or just a little break. And that’s okay! I always tell families it’s important not to stress when things aren’t going “perfectly.” A family photoshoot’s beauty is its unpredictability—often, those imperfect moments lead to the most heartwarming, candid photos.

When kids start to lose focus (as they often do), a little break can make all the difference. Whether it’s a snack, a quick chat, or even some quiet time, stepping away from the session for a few minutes helps kids reset. When they come back, they’re often re-energized, and those genuine, joyful smiles shine through.

One thing I tell parents is that I want to capture their children as they are—right now, in this moment. Whether they’re shy and thoughtful or full of energy and silliness, I aim to reflect that in my photos. I don’t push for “perfect” smiles but instead look for personality and authenticity.
